:) This little gadget is very handy for older hard drives. I've had mine for a couple years & it still works great.
It is very cheap. I plan to attach the SATA adapter to a different power supply to continue using it, but for anyone who doesn't have electrical skill to do the same I say: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. I bought this item to transfer data from my old laptop drive to my new one. I was able to get all the data needed, but two days later while backing up data the thing died on me never to run again.
It's a good idea to set the drive up on blocks to ensure air circulation around it. Sabrent SATA-C35U Serial ATA to USB 2.0 Cable Converter Adapter with Power Supply works exactly as advertised. I've used mine to format a 250 GB hard drive and then used them together to back up my entire C: drive and another data drive.
I only use the sata to usb portion of this device and it works just as advertised. I've been using this with my Dell Mini 9 as a way to access my desktop sata cdrom drive; you can use this to reformat a netbook or any computer that doesn't have a built in cdrom/dvdrom drive if you have a desktop computer.
It worked perfectly. This is just what I needed to salvage my son's hard drive. Thanks.
